No One Can Hear You…

I’ve submitted the banshee story to Three Crow Press for their erotica issue. Fingers crossed!

However I’m also bang-smack in the middle of moving, and will lose home internet at somet point this week (for who knows how long!). So I hope I get a response either before or after then.

My back is no longer my friend, but we’re definitely getting somewhere with the move. I’ve managed to get all my books to the new house, which is obviously the most important part, but the shelves are still at the old house…

Monday Motivation

Since I’m not doing Foody Fridays any more, I thoughts I’d do a Monday link roundup. You have no idea how many synonyms I looked up for “Procrastination” before deciding maybe a more positive spin on the links might make the alliteration easier!

Publishing: Publisher’s Weekly rounds up the year. I keep forgetting Borders US is still going; Number 4 really threw me for a bit.

Interest-Piquing: Mary Beard vs Germaine Greer on the book bollards outside the Cambridge University Library. I say versus; it’s more one very negative opinion and one slightly less so! I read Mary Beard’s column regularly, and I might start reading Greer too; I don’t agree with either all of the time (or even much) but they’re both good for making you think.

InsPiration: If your bees get Varroa mites, dust them with sugar! (well, the idea really tickled me)

Procrastination: Not Always Right. I have lost so much time to this site, having been a sales assistant for several years myself. Whatever you do, don’t hit the Random button!

End of the Year

I feel some kind of summing up post is required. It’s not been a partciularly busy year, writing wise, but it has definitely had some significant acheivements.

In January this year my first story was accepted by a paying market. I discovered Flashes in the Dark, nad got my first acceptance from them as well (and another later in the year). During Spring the Selkie story was undergoing a solid rewrite in order to submit it to Samhain, having been rejected by Ellora’s Cave. During the Summer I got the rejection from Samhain, tweaked it again, and sent it off to Loose Id. At the same time I hammered out Swan Made (I’d spent two months trying to write a story, and then decided on the night of the deadline that I was definitely going to enter something for the Fairy Tales anthology and Swan Made was going to be it, despite the fact it was only half done). In Autumn I received acceptance for Swan Made and a rewrite request from Loose Id. In Winter I rewrote the Selkie Story for Loose Id, which I hope to submit next month, and worked on a bunch of other ongoing projects most of which are still in a notebook, rather than the netbook.

I also attended the Fishguard Writer’s Holiday, Dance Camp East, and The Bram Stoker Film Festival. I went to Scotland for the first time, and saw otters and eagles but no whales (though I did go to Wales, too). I entered multiple competitions. I managed to keep up Foody Fridays (more or less) for a whole year.

Next year? I don’t really know. I’ll definitely go back to Bram Stoker’s. I’m thinking about Fishguard, but I’m not sure about the cost. There is no DCE this year, which leaves summer free – maybe FatE again, or Glastonbury if any tickets appear for resale? I’m probably going back to being a guide at work, which will give me more time to write again.

I’m not a big resolution person. I’d actually forgotten I did make some at the beginning of this year. Once again I’ll recycle the resolutions!

1 – Keep Writing
2 – Keep Revising
3 – Keep Submitting

The long term goals are still ongoing. I’m re-submitting the selkie story before the end of January, and I’m submitting to the Three Crows Press erotica issue again (with a Banshee this time). Novel/novella wise, my goal this year is to finish the first draft of The Dark, whether in a notebook or on a computer. Short story wise, I want to bash Julia Can’t into a condition worth submitting to the WoMag market, and I’d like to write some more like it. I’d also like to try writing more erotica shorts. I’m going to focus on paying markets this year, I think.

Anyone else making resolutions? Have any long term goals you feel you’ve got closer to this year

Foody Friday: A Mrs Beeton Christmas

Last Foody Friday of the year, and isn’t it great that Christmas falls on a Friday. The Victorians were mad for Christmas: they brought in the tree, put the wreath outside, combined Father Christmas and Saint Nicholas to create Satna Claus, and gave us the source material for The Muppets Christmas Carol (I’m sorry, but that is the definitive adaptation!).

We’ve abandoned a lot of traditions over the years, like the Yorkshire Pie. That was a huge beast, with whole partridges, pheasants, geese, rabbit, hares, hams, turkeys, legs of lamb, and anything else that happened to have walked past the kitchen doorway while the chef had their cleaver in hand. It was, essentially, a larder made of pastry. When you took something out you replaced it with butter.

A nice Christmas Eve treat

Google Alerts finally earnt its keep by showing me something I wouldn’t have seen otherwise. A very nice review of Bedknobs and Beanstalks at Well Read. I get first mention 🙂

I’ve been editing the selkie story, which will be ready to go back to Loose Id in the new year, and I’m writing a banshee story to submit to Three Crows Press erotica issue. I’m also losing my temper with Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, listening to The Woman in Black on my MP3 player, and watching far too much Christmas telly (currently King Solomon’s Mines) and eating too much food and drinking too much booze. I love this time of year!

I shan’t be online tomorrow, for obvious reasons, so I’ll wish you all a happy holiday now.
